A Farewell to Outgoing Council Members

Baliles, Samuels, Hilbert, Graziano, Agelasto, Robertson, Newbille, Trammell and Mosby.

Baliles, Samuels, Hilbert, Graziano, Agelasto, Robertson, Newbille, Trammell and Mosby.

Tonight we say goodbye to four of our beloved (or not) council members, but they will not be forgotten. Especially if you bug them on Twitter! Please feel free to encourage them to stay involved in improving our City with a deluge of GIFs!  Thank you for your service, Councilmen Baliles and Samuels and Councilwomen Graziano and Mosby! We wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

Jon “Hell No!” Baliles, 1st District @jonbaliles Facebook Social Media. I'd say he's got a pretty good handle on it. As Councilman, Jon always made decisions he thought were in the best interest of his district and Richmond as a whole. He opposed the Shockoe Stadium project and issued a definitive "HELL NO" in response to Mayor Jones' highest and best use for the Boulevard resolution (05:21:02 in the video below). In the end, he continued to be our good ol' Baliles and did what the City needed him to do -- he dropped out of the mayor's race and backed the eventual winner. Richmond is still waiting to hear what position he will have in the new Stoney administration, and he will. Otherwise there will be a lot of grumpy RVA voters out there.

Charles “Chucky Sams” "I'd Like a Continuance" Samuels, 2nd District  @crsamuels  Facebook Samuels is fairly active on social media. Many of his posts revolve around his family. His son draws a mean turkey.  The 2nd Distrcit is losing a measured decision-maker in Samuels.  In June of 2015, he announced he wouldn't seek reelection, saying, "No elected official has a monopoly on wisdom or good judgment." Eight years is enough. During his time on Council, Charles helped pass a law exempting new businesses relocating to Richmond from our exorbitant BPOL tax for two years and joined Councilman Baliles in opposing Mayor Jones's ill-fated stadium plan.

Kathy "Wonderful YES" GraZZZZiano, 4th District Social media? NAH. Here's her final message to her constituents in the 4th District. A year ago this Wednesday, at the 5 hour mark in the video at the bottom of the page, Graziano smacks Richmond in the face just as it's about to go to bed for the evening. Res. No. 2015-R65-70 got everyone's nickers in a twist and she was just ready to be done with it all.

Michelle “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work “ Mosby, 9th District @MsHelpMeHelpYou Facebook She's a quoter. Mosby's support of the "ban the box" ordinance will be her greatest legacy. Now applicants for city jobs do not have to disclose past felony convictions in the initial application process. Ord. No. 2013-40 was passed unanimously on March 25, 2013. She told the RTD that helping people with issues such as these is why she became a council woman. She didn't win her bid for mayor and has been rather quiet since election day, but it is my hope that she stays involved in the city she so obviously loves.

This round of councilpeople has had its ups and downs and completely off the rails moments. In this time of reflection, one particular meeting pretty well sums up the last four years in six hours. In a night jam packed full of important ordinances, one resolution (and its amendments) melted everyone's faces off.  If you aren't in for the long haul, the good stuff begins at 04:18:00, and the line in the sand in drawn at 05:20:52.  Here's hoping our returning council members commit to working with the new members to improve transparency and avoid shenanigans like this going forward. The election on Nov. 8 made clear that the people of Richmond are looking for those days to be over.
